Product Introduction of Packing Nuts
The packing nut is a clamping and adjusting accessory in the plunger sealing system of a plunger pump. It is usually installed at the outer end of the packing box and fits with the packing box through threads. It works together with the packing gland, sleeve or other clamping parts to apply axial clamping force to the internal plunger packing assembly.
When the plunger pump is in operation, the plunger continuously performs reciprocating motion, and the plunger packing needs to form a dynamic seal around the outer circle of the plunger. The packing nut generates axial displacement by screwing into the packing box, transmitting the force to the packing gland or the corresponding clamping part, thus keeping the packing in an appropriate compressed and working state.
The packing nut itself is not a sealing component that directly achieves dynamic sealing. Its main function is to generate, maintain and adjust the packing compression force. Therefore, its thread size, internal diameter, end face structure, and the fit relationship with the packing gland all need to be matched with the specific specifications of the plunger pump and plunger.
Main function
1. Tightening the plunger packing: After the packing nut is tightened, an axial force is generated, which is transmitted to the packing assembly through the packing gland or sleeve, keeping the packing in a compressed state as per the design requirements.
2. Adjust the working condition of the packing: As the plunger reciprocates, the packing may undergo wear or compression changes. Within the allowable adjustment range of the equipment, the tightness of the packing can be adjusted accordingly through the packing nut.
3. Maintain the position of the sealing assembly: Together with the packing box, packing gland and other components, it forms an axial limit structure to prevent abnormal axial movement of the packing and related sealing parts.
4. Facilitates packing inspection: After loosening and removing the packing nut, the packing gland and the internal packing assembly can be further disassembled, facilitating packing inspection, replacement and maintenance of the packing box.
Working principle
The packing nut usually converts rotational motion into axial movement by using the thread pair between it and the packing box. When the nut is tightened inward, its compression end face pushes the packing gland or the corresponding compression sleeve, exerting axial compression on the internal packing assembly.
After the packing is axially compressed, it will produce a corresponding radial sealing effect according to the packing structure, thereby enhancing the sealing fit between the packing and the outer circle of the plunger as well as the inner cavity of the packing box. The actual adjustment amount should be based on the specific pump type and the maintenance requirements of the packing manufacturer. It is not advisable to simply handle all leakage problems by continuously tightening the nuts.
The difference from packing gland
Packing nuts and packing gland covers are usually used in combination, but they are not the same part.
The packing nut is usually connected to the packing box by threads and is responsible for generating and adjusting the axial clamping force. The packing gland is located between the nut and the packing, and is mainly responsible for evenly transmitting the clamping force to the packing assembly.
Therefore, when selecting the type, in addition to confirming the thread of the packing nut itself, it is also necessary to check the outer diameter, inner diameter and contact end face of the matching packing gland to avoid affecting the packing compression state due to structural mismatch.
The matching relationship with the plunger specifications
Packing nuts are usually not universal for all plunger specifications. Different plunger diameters may correspond to different packing boxes, packing covers and packing nuts. In the public maintenance data of plunger pumps, for the same series of pumps, different specifications of Stuffing Box nuts will be configured for different plunger diameters.
Therefore, when making a purchase, one cannot merely judge based on the equipment series; it is also necessary to simultaneously confirm the diameter of the plunger and the specification of the packing box.
Common examination areas
During maintenance, special attention should be paid to inspecting the internal and external threads of the packing nut, the clamping end face, the center through hole, and the position where the tool is used. If thread wear, random threading, cracks, deformation or abnormal wear of the compression end face occurs, it may affect normal adjustment and the force state of the packing.
If the packing nut has been screwed in relatively deep but the packing position still continues to leak, it is necessary to check whether the packing has reached the wear limit, and simultaneously inspect the surface of the plunger, the packing gland, the packing box and the guiding parts. It is not advisable to continue to increase the packing compression amount infinitely.
Key points for selection
The packing nut is a part that directly matches the specifications of the packing box and the plunger. When purchasing, it is recommended to focus on confirming the following information
1. Brand, series and specific model of plunger pump;
2. Plunger diameter and specifications;
3. Packing box model and installation structure;
4. Thread diameter, pitch and direction of rotation;
5. Outer diameter and total length of the packing nut;
6. Central through hole size;
7. Dimensions of the end face in contact with the packing gland;
8. External disassembly and assembly structure or special wrench form;
9. Original part number, physical sample or technical drawing.
Installation and Maintenance
Before installation, the mating threads of the packing nut and the packing box should be cleaned to check for burrs, scratches, rust or thread deformation. It should also be confirmed that the internal parts such as the packing, spacer ring and packing gland have been installed in the correct sequence.
When screwing in the packing nut, it should be kept coaxial with the packing box to avoid damage to the threads due to oblique screwing or forced tightening. When adjusting the tightness of the packing, it should be carried out in accordance with the maintenance requirements of the corresponding pump type to avoid insufficient compression causing leakage, as well as excessive compression leading to increased friction of the plunger, temperature rise of the packing and abnormal wear.
Some plunger pumps are also equipped with packing nut locking parts to maintain the adjusted position of the nut. During maintenance, it is necessary to simultaneously check whether the corresponding locking structures are intact. The originally designed anti-loosening or locking components should not be removed at will.
Before adjusting or removing the packing nut of the high-pressure plunger pump, the shutdown, pressure relief and medium isolation should be completed in accordance with the equipment operation procedures. Only after confirming that there is no residual pressure at the hydraulic end can the operation be carried out.
