Product Introduction of Cylinder Liner Cover
The cylinder liner gland is a dedicated clamping accessory in the hydraulic end cylinder liner installation system of drilling mud pumps. It is usually used in conjunction with cylinder liners, cylinder liner flanges, cylinder liner sealing rings, and hydraulic cylinders, etc. It is mainly used for axial clamping and position fixation of cylinder liners.
During the operation of the mud pump, the piston moves back and forth at high speed inside the cylinder liner, and the cylinder liner is simultaneously subjected to periodic liquid pressure, piston movement load and vibration shock. The cylinder liner gland applies axial preload to the cylinder liner through threads or corresponding locking structures, keeping the cylinder liner in a stable installation position inside the hydraulic end.
The cylinder liner gland of different mud pump models may have significant differences in thread profile, outer diameter, length, center hole, pressure-bearing end face and tool interface. Therefore, accurate selection should be made based on the original part number, physical dimensions or technical drawings.
The main function of the cylinder liner cover
1. Axial compression of cylinder liner: Axial preload is generated through threaded tightening or a dedicated locking structure to press the cylinder liner tightly at the specified installation position.
2. Maintain the positioning of the cylinder liner: Restrict the axial movement of the cylinder liner during the operation of the mud pump, and maintain the correct assembly relationship between the cylinder liner and the liquid cylinder, piston and sealing parts.
3. Provide compression conditions for cylinder liner sealing: The cylinder liner gland, by applying pre-tightening to the cylinder liner and related components, provides a mechanical basis for maintaining a stable compressed state of the cylinder liner sealing ring or sealing structure.
4. Facilitate the disassembly, assembly and maintenance of cylinder liners: When replacing cylinder liners, pistons or related seals, the cylinder liner gland is an important connecting part that needs to be disassembled.
Working principle
The cylinder liner gland is usually connected to the cylinder liner flange or the hydraulic end mounting seat through large-diameter threads. After the gland is tightened, the thread converts the rotational motion into axial displacement, exerting a compressive force on the inner side of the gland towards the end of the cylinder liner.
This clamping force is transmitted along the axial direction of the cylinder liner, ensuring a reliable fit between the end face of the cylinder liner, the cylinder liner seal, and the installation surface of the hydraulic cylinder, thereby reducing the possibility of the cylinder liner loosening under reciprocating impact and pressure pulsation conditions.
If the compression is insufficient, it may cause axial loosening of the cylinder liner, abnormal sealing condition or local vibration. If the screw thread of the gland, the pressure-bearing surface or the adjacent installation structure is damaged, simply increasing the tightening force cannot solve the fundamental problem.
The fit relationship with the cylinder liner flange
The cylinder liner gland and the cylinder liner flange are two different parts in the cylinder liner installation system.
Cylinder liner gland: Mainly responsible for tightening, pressing and maintaining the axial pre-tightening of the cylinder liner.
Cylinder liner flange: It mainly provides an installation and force-bearing foundation for the cylinder liner cover and forms a connection with the hydraulic cylinder or adjacent structures.
In the threaded connection structure, the gland thread must be correctly matched with the cylinder liner flange thread in terms of diameter, pitch, thread profile, rotation direction and effective meshing length, etc. It is not possible to determine whether they can be interchanged merely based on the proximity of the outer diameter.
The difference from cylinder liner sealing
The cylinder liner gland is a mechanical clamping and positioning component, and it is usually not the main sealing element at the hydraulic end cylinder liner position by itself.
The actual static seal between the cylinder liner and the liquid cylinder is usually accomplished by the cylinder liner sealing ring, sealing gasket or the corresponding special sealing structure. The function of the cylinder liner gland is to maintain the specified compression and positioning conditions for these seals.
Therefore, if leakage occurs at the cylinder liner position, in addition to checking whether the gland is loose, the cylinder liner seal, sealing groove, cylinder liner end face and the mating surface of the liquid cylinder should also be inspected.
Threads and pressure-bearing parts
Cylinder liner gland usually has large-sized connection threads, and the thread surface is an important force-bearing part for transmitting axial preload force. After long-term disassembly and assembly or use under contaminated or poorly lubricated conditions, thread scratches, seizing, corrosion, deformation or local chipping may occur.
The inner pressure-bearing end face of the gland and the positioning steps are also key working positions. If there are obvious indentations, uneven wear or deformation, it may cause uneven force on the cylinder liner.
Some mud pumps adopt special thread profiles or special large thread structures. The specific thread form should be based on the original equipment drawings and it is not advisable to use other similar thread structures as substitutes.
Common Failures and Inspections
Common abnormalities of cylinder liner gland cover include wear or seizing of connecting threads, damage to tool force-bearing grooves, uneven wear of pressure-bearing surfaces, corrosion, deformation and cracks, etc.
If the cylinder liner repeatedly loosens, the flange thread of the cylinder liner, the end face of the cylinder liner, the cylinder liner seal, the installation surface of the liquid cylinder and the related positioning structure should be inspected simultaneously.
If the screw thread of the gland is severely scratched or locally deformed, forcibly continuing to tighten it may further damage the cylinder liner flange and increase the subsequent maintenance cost.
Key points for selection
When purchasing the cylinder liner cover of a drilling mud pump, it is recommended to focus on confirming the following information:
1. Brand, series and specific model of mud pump;
2. Model of the hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic end;
3. Cylinder liner specifications and installation dimensions;
4. Cylinder liner flange model;
5. Nominal diameter of the cover screw thread;
6. Pitch, tooth profile and direction of rotation;
7. Effective thread length;
8. Outer diameter, center hole and total length of the gland cover;
9. Inner pressure-bearing surface and positioning step structure;
10. Tool force-bearing grooves, holes or special disassembly and assembly interfaces;
11. Original part number, physical sample or technical drawing.
Installation and Maintenance
Before installation, the cylinder liner gland and the cylinder liner flange thread should be thoroughly cleaned to remove mud, rust, metal particles and other foreign substances, and check whether there are any scratches or deformations on the thread surface.
Make sure that the cylinder liner, cylinder liner seals and related positioning parts are correctly in place before installing and tightening the cylinder liner cover. It is not advisable to force the cylinder liner to be tightened when it is skewed or the seal is not installed correctly.
If abnormal jamming occurs during the installation of the gland, the thread profile, pitch, rotation direction and damage to the tooth surface should be inspected. It is not advisable to force it in by continuous knocking or excessive force.
The specific disassembly and assembly tools, thread lubrication requirements and pre-tightening methods should be carried out in accordance with the corresponding mud pump maintenance manual. The uniform empirical torque should not be used to replace the original equipment regulations.
