Product Introduction of Suction Flange

The suction flange is a connecting accessory in the suction system of the drilling mud pump. It is usually installed at the connection position of the hydraulic end suction inlet, the suction main pipe or the suction pipeline, and is used to establish a reliable mechanical connection between the hydraulic end of the mud pump and the external suction system.

When the mud pump is in operation, the drilling fluid enters the hydraulic end through the suction pipeline, the main suction pipe and related connecting structures, and then enters the cylinder liner or working chamber through the suction valve. The suction flange is located at the connection part of this liquid inlet path. It is necessary to keep the channel centered, the interface position stable and provide installation conditions for static sealing.

The suction flange itself is usually a metal connection part. To actually prevent the leakage of slurry from the flange joint surface, it generally needs to be combined with sealing gaskets, O-rings, special flange seals or other sealing structures to complete the task. The specific sealing form should be based on the original structure of the mud pump.

The main function of the suction flange

1. Connect the suction system: It is used to connect the hydraulic end suction inlet of the slurry pump with the suction main pipe, suction pipeline or related connection components.

2. Keep the liquid inlet channel centered: Through the arrangement of the center hole, flange installation surface and bolt holes, maintain the correct positional relationship between the suction pipeline and the liquid inlet channel of the hydraulic end.

3. Provide a sealing installation foundation: The sealing surface or sealing groove of the suction flange provides installation, compression and positioning conditions for sealing gaskets, O-rings or special flange sealing parts.

4. Bear connection loads: After the bolts or studs are pre-tightened, the flange bears the connection clamping force as well as the pipeline loads and vibrations generated during operation.

Working characteristics of the suction side

The suction flange operates on the suction side of the mud pump and is usually in a lower pressure area compared to the discharge flange. However, its working condition is still affected by the suction pulsation of the reciprocating pump, pipeline vibration, and the scouring of drilling fluid.

If there is flange leakage or poor sealing in the suction system, it may not only cause mud leakage but also introduce air in some suction conditions, affecting the stability of the mud pump filling.

Therefore, in addition to ensuring reliable mechanical connections, the suction flange should also pay attention to the condition of the sealing surface, the specifications of the sealing parts, and the alignment of pipeline installation.

The coordination relationship with the inhalation main pipe

Suction flange: It belongs to the connection interface component, mainly responsible for flange connection, positioning and sealing and pressing the foundation.

Suction main pipe: It is a fluid transportation and distribution component of the slurry pump suction system, transporting slurry to one or more hydraulic end suction ports.

In the specific structure of a mud pump, the suction flange may be located at the end of the main suction pipe or serve as an independent connecting component between the hydraulic end and the suction pipeline. The specific installation location should be based on the original pump structure and parts drawings.

The difference from flange sealing

The suction flange and the flange seal belong to different parts in the same connection area.

Suction flange: It is a rigid connection main body, responsible for connection, positioning and bearing the fastening load.

Flange sealing: It is a sealing element installed in the flange joint surface or sealing groove, mainly responsible for preventing drilling fluid from leaking from the joint surface.

When replacing the suction flange, both the original seal and the sealing surface should be inspected simultaneously. If the sealing parts have undergone compression deformation, aging or damage, they should be replaced simultaneously in accordance with the equipment maintenance requirements.

Flow channels and paths

The center hole of the suction flange is an important channel for drilling fluid to enter the mud pump, and its effective diameter should match that of the suction main pipe, the suction pipeline and the hydraulic end interface.

If the center diameter of the replaced flange is too small, it may increase the local suction resistance. If the center hole, internal steps or interface transition structure are inconsistent with the original design, it may also affect the mud flow and flange assembly.

Therefore, when selecting the model, it is not only necessary to compare the outer diameter of the flange, but also to confirm the center diameter, internal steps, interface depth, and the fit dimensions with adjacent suction components.

Bolt holes and installation dimensions

The number of installation holes, hole diameter, center circle of the holes or center distance of the holes of the suction flange must be consistent with the corresponding hydraulic end, suction main pipe or pipe interface.

Even if two flanges have the same or similar center diameters, they cannot be directly interchanged if their outer diameters, thicknesses, number of holes, hole spacings or sealing surface structures are different.

For flanges with directional requirements, it is also necessary to confirm the direction of the hole position and whether there is any installation interference with adjacent air tanks, suction main pipes, pipelines and support structures.

Common Failures and Inspections

When inspecting the suction flange, special attention should be paid to checking the sealing surface, sealing groove, center flow channel, bolt holes, installation surface and structural transition positions.

Common abnormalities include scratches on the sealing surface, erosion by drilling fluid, corrosion, indentations on the installation surface, wear of bolt holes, and deformation of flanges, etc.

If there is repeated leakage at the suction flange connection position, in addition to checking the fasteners, it is also necessary to inspect the flange sealing surface, the specifications of the sealing parts, the alignment of the pipeline, and whether the adjacent connecting parts have deformed.

Key points for selection

When purchasing the suction flange of the drilling mud pump, it is recommended to focus on confirming the following information:

1. Brand, series and specific model of mud pump;

2. Hydraulic end or hydraulic cylinder model;

3. Specific installation position of the suction flange;

4. Center diameter of the suction inlet;

5. Flange outer diameter and thickness;

6. Number and diameter of installation holes;

7. Center circle of the hole or center distance of the installation hole;

8. Sealing surface or sealing groove structure;

9. Connection dimensions with the main suction pipe or pipeline;

10. Matching sealing parts and fasteners;

11. Original part number, physical sample or technical drawing.

Installation and Maintenance

Before installation, the center flow channel, sealing surface, sealing groove and installation hole of the suction flange should be cleaned to ensure there is no mud deposit, old sealing material, burrs or other foreign objects that may affect assembly.

When installing, it is necessary to ensure that the suction flange is correctly centered with the suction main pipe, the hydraulic end or the pipe interface. It is not advisable to correct obvious pipe misalignment by forcibly tightening the flange bolts, as this may cause additional stress on the flange and the hydraulic end interface.

Multi-bolt flanges should be tightened step by step, crosswily and evenly in accordance with the requirements of the corresponding equipment to ensure that the pressure on the sealing parts is as uniform as possible. The specific tightening torque and lubrication requirements should be carried out in accordance with the corresponding mud pump maintenance data.

Before disassembling the suction flange, the pump should be stopped and the suction system isolated in accordance with the equipment operation procedures. Maintenance can only be carried out after confirming that the relevant pipelines, air tanks and other connecting equipment are in a safe state.
