Product Introduction of O-rings

O-rings are commonly used elastic static sealing accessories in drilling mud pumps. Their cross-sections are usually circular and they are widely used for static sealing at the hydraulic end, power end and auxiliary connection parts. Depending on the specific structure of the mud pump, O-rings can be installed on valve covers, plug covers, flanges, joints, oil seal seats, measurement interfaces, and other fixed connection positions with sealing grooves.

The O-ring is installed in the sealing groove of the specified size. After assembly, it generates a certain compression amount, causing the sealing ring to form continuous contact with the bottom of the groove and the adjacent sealing surface, thereby sealing the leakage channel between the parts.

The O-rings used at different positions of the mud pump may vary completely in terms of inner diameter, cross-sectional diameter, material, hardness, working pressure and medium adaptability. Therefore, it is not possible to determine whether they can be interchanged merely based on color, similar outer diameter or "fit in".

The main function of O-rings

1. Fixed interface static sealing: O-rings are mainly used for sealing between two relatively fixed parts, such as valve covers and liquid cylinders, plug covers and valve boxes, flanges and connecting parts, as well as other fixed installation interfaces.

2. Seal the leakage channel of the working medium: After the sealing ring is under pressure, it fills the fit gap to prevent the leakage of drilling fluid, lubricating oil or other working media along the mating surface of the parts.

3. Compensating for minor dimensional deviations: O-rings are elastic and can compensate for minor dimensional errors and assembly clearances between sealing surfaces within the design allowable range.

4. Easy to disassemble, assemble and maintain: Compared with metal sealing structures, O-rings are more convenient to disassemble, assemble and replace, making them suitable for valve covers, plug covers and auxiliary interface positions of mud pumps that require regular maintenance.

The sealing principle of O-rings

After the O-ring is installed in the sealing groove, it generates the specified initial compression in the radial or axial direction, causing the circular cross-section to undergo elastic deformation and form contact pressure with the sealing groove and the adjacent mating surface.

When the pressure of the working medium acts on one side of the O-ring, the sealing ring will deform accordingly towards the low-pressure side, further adhering to the sealing surface, thereby forming a pressure-assisted sealing effect.

The sealing effect of O-rings is closely related to the size of the sealing groove, the compression amount, the fit clearance and the hardness of the material. Insufficient compression may cause leakage, while excessive compression may lead to assembly difficulties, deformation or premature damage.

Common application locations in mud pumps

O-rings are widely used in drilling mud pumps, specifically including but not limited to valve covers, suction plug covers, discharge pressure covers, auxiliary joints at the hydraulic end, measurement interfaces, oil seal seat assemblies, as well as some flanges and connecting parts.

The pressure ratings, media and structures vary at different installation positions. Even if two O-rings are of similar size, they may not be interchangeable due to differences in materials, hardness or sealing groove designs.

The difference between O-rings and special-shaped seals

The typical feature of O-rings is their circular cross-section. They cannot be mixed with D-rings, lip seals, special-shaped seals for valve covers, or seals for cylinder liners.

If the original design adopts D-shaped, lip-shaped or other special-shaped cross-sections, even if the inner diameter of the ordinary O-ring is the same, its compression method, compression area and sealing groove matching relationship are different and should not be directly replaced.

When purchasing, the cross-sectional shape of the original seal should be confirmed to avoid merely understanding "O-rings" as a general term for all ring-shaped rubber seals.

Sealing groove and compression amount

When selecting O-rings, in addition to confirming the inner diameter and cross-sectional diameter, it is also necessary to verify the diameter, width, depth of the sealing groove and the actual assembly clearance.

If the sealing groove is too deep, it may cause insufficient compression of the O-ring; if it is too shallow, it may result in excessive compression. Insufficient groove width will limit the deformation space of the sealing ring under pressure, while excessive groove width may increase the displacement and extrusion risk of the sealing element.

Therefore, the O-rings of mud pumps cannot be purchased merely based on "inner diameter × wire diameter". For high-pressure or critical sealing positions, the sealing grooves and fit clearances should also be checked simultaneously.

Retaining ring and anti-extrusion structure

In some high-pressure sealing positions, O-rings may be used in conjunction with retaining rings, support rings or other anti-extrusion parts. These auxiliary parts are used to restrict the O-ring from being extruded into the fit clearance under pressure.

If the original design comes with a retaining ring, during maintenance, only the O-rings should be replaced while the retaining rings are omitted, nor should the number and installation position of the retaining rings be changed at will.

Whether a retaining ring is needed should be determined based on the original pump structure, working pressure, assembly clearance and sealing design. A uniform configuration of O-rings cannot be adopted for all mud pumps.

Material and medium adaptability

The material of the O-ring for the mud pump should be selected based on the actual working medium, temperature, pressure and the original equipment material specifications. Different elastomers vary in terms of oil resistance, water resistance, temperature resistance, chemical medium resistance and compressive deformation resistance.

O-rings of the same size may have significantly different actual sealing performance and service life if made of different materials or with different hardness levels. Therefore, the material cannot be judged merely based on its appearance color, nor is it recommended to change the material at will beyond the requirements of the original equipment.

Common failure forms

Common failure forms of O-rings include hardening, compression deformation, cutting, twisting, extrusion, tearing, wear, and expansion or softening caused by incompatible media.

If there are local cuts on the O-ring, check whether there are burrs or sharp edges at the entrance of the sealing groove, the thread and the installation hole. If obvious extrusion occurs, the working pressure, fit clearance, sealing hardness and retaining ring configuration should be inspected.

For locations where leakage occurs repeatedly, it is also necessary to check whether the sealing grooves have been eroded, corroded or deformed, and whether there are scratches on the sealing surfaces of adjacent parts. It is not advisable to merely replace the O-rings repeatedly.

Key points for selection

When purchasing O-rings for drilling mud pumps, it is recommended to focus on confirming the following information:

1. Brand, series and specific model of mud pump;

2. Specific installation position of the O-ring;

3. Names and original part numbers of the matching parts;

4. Inner diameter of O-ring;

5. Cross-sectional diameter or wire diameter;

6. Diameter of the sealing groove

7. Width and depth of the sealing groove;

8. Radial sealing or axial end face sealing structure;

9. Working pressure and assembly clearance;

10. Whether a retaining ring or support ring is configured;

11. Sealing materials and hardness requirements;

12. Working medium and temperature conditions;

13. Original part number, physical sample or technical drawing.

Installation and Inspection

Before installation, the sealing groove and mating surfaces should be cleaned, and mud, residues of old seals, rust and metal particles should be removed. Also, check whether there are burrs and sharp edges at the groove openings, threads and transition positions.

During the assembly process, it is necessary to avoid directly scratching the O-ring with sharp tools, and also to prevent the sealing ring from being overly stretched, twisted or partially flipped. The lubrication method should be carried out in accordance with the assembly requirements of the corresponding mud pump and sealing materials.

For O-rings that need to be installed over threads, keyways or sharp edges, appropriate protective measures should be taken to prevent the sealing rings from being cut during assembly.

After the equipment is put back into operation, it is necessary to check whether there is any leakage at the corresponding sealing positions. If leakage occurs again within a short period of time, the size of the sealing groove, adjacent sealing surfaces and assembly clearance should be further inspected.
