Introduction to Hydraulic End Assembly products

The hydraulic end assembly is the core working assembly of the plunger pump that directly completes the suction, pressurization and discharge of the medium. It is installed at the front of the power end of the plunger pump and establishes a working connection with the power end through the plunger or the corresponding reciprocating motion parts.

After the power end converts the rotational motion into reciprocating motion, it drives the plunger to move periodically in the working chamber of the hydraulic end, causing changes in the volume of the working chamber. Under the coordination of the suction valve and the discharge valve, the hydraulic end completes the processes of medium suction, closed pressurization and high-pressure discharge.

The hydraulic end assembly is typically composed of the hydraulic end body or valve box, the suction valve assembly, the discharge valve assembly, the plunger sealing system, the gland or plug cover, the spring and support parts, the sealing parts and related connecting components. The specific composition and supply boundaries of different pump types vary. The original equipment parts list and technical drawings shall prevail.

The main function of the hydraulic end assembly

1. Form the plunger working chamber: Inside the hydraulic end main body, a pressure-bearing working space is formed that cooperates with the plunger, valve assembly and flow channel, providing a structural basis for the periodic suction and pressurization of the medium.

2. Complete the medium suction: When the plunger generates the suction stroke, the pressure in the working chamber drops. Under the action of the pressure difference, the suction valve opens, and the medium enters the working chamber through the suction channel.

3. Complete medium pressurization and discharge: After the plunger enters the discharge stroke, the volume of the working chamber decreases, the medium pressure rises, and the suction valve closes. When the pressure in the working chamber meets the opening condition of the discharge valve, the high-pressure medium enters the discharge system through the discharge channel.

4. Installation and positioning of valve groups: The hydraulic end provides installation and positioning structures for suction valves, discharge valves, valve seats, springs, spring supports or retaining parts, etc., to maintain the correct opening and closing relationship of the valve groups.

5. Establish a seal at the plunger end: The hydraulic end works in coordination with the packing box, plunger packing, compression parts and related sealing components to seal and control the high-pressure medium around the reciprocating plunger.

The suction and discharge working process

Suction stroke: The plunger moves in the direction of increasing the volume of the working chamber, and the pressure inside the chamber decreases. When a sufficient pressure difference is formed between the suction side and the working chamber, the suction valve opens and the medium enters the working chamber. At this time, the discharge valve remains closed.

Discharge stroke: The reverse movement of the plunger reduces the volume of the working chamber, and the suction valve closes to prevent the backflow of the medium. As the pressure in the working chamber rises, the discharge valve opens, and the medium enters the discharge channel and the downstream high-pressure system.

The multi-piston pump operates continuously through multiple working chambers in accordance with corresponding phases, jointly forming the overall displacement output of the piston pump.

The main components of the hydraulic end assembly

Hydraulic end main body/valve box: It is the main pressure-bearing structural component of the assembly. The interior is machined with a working chamber, suction and discharge flow channels, valve seat installation position, and installation holes for related accessories.

Suction valve assembly: It is usually composed of an suction valve body, valve seat, spring and related supporting positioning parts, controlling the medium to enter the working chamber and preventing reverse backflow.

Discharge valve assembly: It controls the pressurized medium to enter the discharge channel from the working chamber and return to its original position to close when the pressure conditions change.

Plunger and sealing components: Depending on the specific pump type, they may include plungers, plunger packing, packing boxes, compression parts, guide or spacer rings, etc., which are used to establish reciprocating motion and high-pressure dynamic sealing.

Gland, plug and sealing parts: Used to close the valve cavity or maintenance opening, and in combination with O-rings, D-rings, sealing gaskets and other static sealing parts, to control leakage at the pressure-bearing joint.

Suction, discharge and measurement interfaces: Used for connection with the suction system, discharge system and pressure measurement components. Whether the suction main pipe, discharge main pipe and measurement main pipe are included in the supply range of the hydraulic end assembly should be determined according to the specific product configuration.

Pressure-bearing and sealing characteristics

The hydraulic end is in direct contact with the working medium, and its main body, valve cavity, plunger cavity and discharge channel need to withstand periodic pressure loads. During the continuous operation of a plunger pump, the hydraulic end is also subject to pressure pulsation, impact from the opening and closing of the valve body, and cyclic loads caused by reciprocating motion.

There are multiple sealing forms simultaneously inside the hydraulic end. The packing of the plunger is responsible for the dynamic sealing of the reciprocating motion position of the plunger, while the gland cover, plug cover, valve box interface and other fixed connection positions usually adopt the corresponding static sealing structure.

Therefore, the maintenance of the hydraulic end assembly should not focus solely on one sealing ring or one valve component. Instead, a comprehensive judgment should be made by taking into account the leakage location, abnormal pressure, the working condition of the valve group, and the sealing condition of the plunger.

The working status of the valve assembly

The suction valve and the discharge valve are the key components for achieving unidirectional conveying at the hydraulic end. The sealing surfaces of the valve body and the valve seat need to maintain a correct fit. The spring is responsible for the return of the valve body, while the spring support or holding structure is used to support, position or restrict the related parts.

Erosion and wear of the valve seat or valve body, as well as fatigue or breakage of the spring, may all lead to untimely valve closure or poor sealing, which in turn affects the suction efficiency, displacement and pressure stability of the plunger pump.

Plunger seal system

The plunger extends from the working chamber side of the hydraulic end towards the power transmission direction, and a dedicated reciprocating sealing system needs to be set up around the plunger. The plunger packing forms a dynamic seal with the surface of the plunger. The packing box provides an installation cavity for the sealing assembly. The gland, packing nut or corresponding tightening part positions and tightens the packing according to the specific structure.

If leakage occurs at the end of the plunger, in addition to checking the wear of the packing, the working surface of the plunger, the packing box, the compression assembly and related static sealing parts should also be inspected to avoid only replacing the packing while neglecting other mating parts.

Common Faults and Inspections

Common problems with hydraulic end assemblies include leakage at the plunger end, leakage at the gland or plug position, poor sealing of the valve group, insufficient suction, abnormal discharge pressure, erosion of the valve seat and flow passage, and corrosion of pressure-bearing parts, etc.

During maintenance, the valve body, valve seat, valve spring, plunger, packing, packing box, gland, plug cover, sealing ring and related sealing surfaces should be inspected according to the location of the fault.

For the main body of the hydraulic end, it is also necessary to focus on inspecting whether there is abnormal wear, erosion, corrosion, deformation or cracking in the valve seat hole, plunger cavity, threaded connection part, sealing groove, suction and discharge flow channel and high-stress structural transition area.

Key points for selection

When purchasing the hydraulic end assembly of a plunger pump, it is recommended to focus on confirming the following information:

1. Brand, series and complete models of plunger pumps;

2. Power end model and hydraulic end model;

3. Number and diameter of plungers;

4. Hydraulic end main body or valve box structure;

5. Specifications of the suction valve and discharge valve;

6. Specifications of plunger packing and packing box;

7. Connection dimensions of the suction port and the discharge port;

8. Connection dimensions between the hydraulic end and the power end;

9. Working medium and equipment design conditions;

10. Actual supply scope of the assembly;

11. Original assembly number and internal part number;

12. Equipment nameplates, physical photos or technical drawings.

Installation and Maintenance

Before installing the hydraulic end assembly, the installation surface, positioning structure and fasteners connected to the power end should be inspected. It is also necessary to ensure that the interior of the suction, discharge and measurement channels is clean and free of processing debris and other foreign objects.

When installing, it is necessary to maintain the correct assembly relationship between the hydraulic end and the power end, the center of the plunger transmission, and the suction and discharge pipelines. Avoid correcting obvious misalignment by forcibly tightening.

Valve groups, gland covers, plug covers, packing and various sealing parts should be installed in the assembly sequence corresponding to the pump type. The pre-tightening sequence, tightening torque, valve seat installation requirements and packing adjustment methods of key fasteners should be based on the original equipment technical data, and it is not advisable to use uniform empirical values as substitutes.

The hydraulic end belongs to the main pressure-bearing area of the plunger pump. Before disassembling the hydraulic end assembly, valve cover, plug cover, valve group or plunger seal assembly, the machine must be shut down, isolated and it must be confirmed that the system has been completely depressified in accordance with the equipment operating procedures.
